โœ… What We Love

  • Eliminates knee and ankle pressure
  • Great for people who can't sit cross-legged
  • Natural upright posture without effort

  • Not comfortable on hard floors without a mat underneath
  • Fixed angle doesn't work for all body types
  • Less portable than a cushion
Practitioner's Take

About half my clients can't comfortably sit cross-legged due to tight hips or knee issues. A seiza bench is the answer. You kneel, sit back on the bench, and your spine stacks perfectly upright with zero effort. I keep one in my practice room alongside cushions because everyone's body is different. If cross-legged sitting has stopped you from meditating, try a bench before giving up.

Full Review

The zafu cushion gets all the attention, but for many people โ€” especially those with knee issues, tight hips, or lower back pain โ€” a seiza (kneeling) bench is far more comfortable.

How it works:
You kneel on a mat or cushion, then sit back onto the bench. The bench lifts your sit bones off your heels, transferring weight to the bench seat instead of your ankles and knees. Your spine naturally aligns upright.

What to look for:

  • Angle: Most benches have a slight forward tilt (5โ€“10 degrees) to encourage natural spinal alignment

  • Height: 6โ€“8 inches. Taller people may need 8"+

  • Width: Ensure it's wide enough for your sit bones (12โ€“14 inches standard)

  • Foldable: Hinged legs fold flat for storage and travel

  • Padding: Some have a thin cushion on the seat. Nice but not essential if you add your own

Who should consider a bench over a cushion:
  • People with knee or ankle injuries

  • People with tight hips who find cross-legged painful

  • Taller practitioners who need more height

  • Anyone who's tried cushions and given up on sitting meditation

The verdict:
A foldable wooden meditation bench ($40โ€“55) is an excellent alternative to cushions. If traditional sitting hasn't worked for you, this might be what makes meditation click.
